BCIS Online Rates Database Help
Rate Navigation
BCIS rate datasets can contain as many as 35,000 pieces of text so we have produced a solution which allows you to navigate them easily and shows you what you need without cluttering the screen.
When you first enter a dataset, you are presented with a list of the chapter headings.
To drill in to an item of interest, simply click on the text. The list opens up to show you the lines below your selection. When you reach a rated item, the rate information will appear in the columns to the right.
The icons to the left of each piece of text show you what is displayed as shown below.
- Right Arrow - Click on the item to display more detail.
- Down Arrow - Detail below this item is displayed.
- Dots - no further information exists below this level.
As you move around the dataset the view is automatically cleaned up so that what you see is always:
- The Section Headings
- The relevant headings above your selection
- All the description at the same level as your selection
- Everything one level beneath your selection (if present).
- This ensures that your view is always concise and relevant.
You can click on the Code Column to the left of the description to add a rate to your Abstract.

In the columns to the right of the screen, the Following information is displayed for rated items:
Unit - the units in which the work is measured
Total - The total rate per unit
Man-Hours - The number of productive man hours included in the build up.
Plant-Hours - The number of plant hours included in the build up.
Net Labour Rate - the total cost of labour included in the rate.
Net Plant Rate - the total cost of Plant included in the rate.
Net Mats Rate - the total cost of Material included in the rate.
Specialist - the total cost of specialist rates included in the rate.

If you have subscribed to the enhanced service, the Total will be displayed as a hyperlink.
Clicking on the link will open a new window showing the Rate Build Up including labour, material and plant constants and showing each component separately.
Note that Composite items are built up from other items and the Build-Up for these only shows the direct constituents.
Drilling down on a build up
An underlined figure enables the user to drill down to see the underlying calculation. This is useful both for understanding the build up of figures in the Wessex datasets but also for learning how to build up your own custom approximate estimating rates.
